Random thoughts for a cloudy morning

  • Why do we get so excited for tax-free weekends, but yet we don’t do anything to fight over taxation the remaining 362 days of the year?
  • Today we’ll hear how the Brickyard 400 … er, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, is the most important race on the NASCAR schedule. I think people who write that say it only because the race is at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I do believe it is an important race, and one of the top four in the year. But the Daytona 500 is still the Masters of NASCAR. The other two “majors,” I believe, are the Coca-Cola 600 and perhaps the night Bristol race. I think NASCAR would benefit themselves by going back to the old system of having the four crown jewel races to have drivers shoot for each year. Those races were the Daytona 500, the Winston 500 (at Talledega), the Coca-Cola 600, and the Southern 500.
  • My family is coming in next weekend. They will go to church with me and then I’m off to being officially named president-elect for my alumni chapter. I’m nervous about this (more in a blog to be written later).
  • John Madden’s induction speech was awesome yesterday, but I think Reggie White’s widdow stole the show. Her speech was filled with passion, love, and respect. It was nice to see the Eagles show up in force for his induction. That’s classy.
  • I’m contemplating changing my voter registration from Republican to Independent. Do I get a gold star? I mean I’ve been a Democrat (1998 to 2002) Republican (2002 to present) and when I change my registration I’ll have touched all the major bases. I should get a gold star.
