Well, Pluto was given its pink slip today as a planet. Poor planet. It seems as though the International Astronomical Union (who knew that existed before today…not I.) established new rules for planetary status.
So what would happen if we changed the rules for other things - say states or counties. I’ve always been in favor of eliminating counties as population bases have changed. Here in North Carolina, I believe we could easily combine counties such as Cleveland and Rutherford, Gaston and Lincoln, and in the Triangle, Orange and Durham. In this day and age, there is no need for 100 counties. Same as there is no need for 55 counties in a state with a population of 1.8 million (West Virginia).
Regardless, today we say goodbye to Pluto. The planet that was way out in no man’s land in the Heaven’s. It is now a dwarf planet, whatever that means.
Then again, there was really only one Pluto.
