Lazy Weekend, Many Complex and Interesting Thoughts

Posted by Shannon on October 2, 2006

The case involving Rep. Mark Foley in Florida is one of the most disgusting that has come out of Washington in some time. In case you haven’t heard, which probably means you’ve slept under a rock the past few days, Foley is accused of sending very inappropriate e-mails to male pages or in other words a high school intern. Foley did the right thing in resigning. He has lost the privledge to serve the people of Florida, and he needs help - seriously. Also, Speaker of the House Dennis Hassert is doing the right thing as well by seeking a criminal probe into the e-mails.

But, welcome to the final month of an all-important 2006 election cycle. With Democrats expected to make gains in both the House and Senate, Democrats spent the weekend pulling out the same play from the playbook. It’s 32 right, blue blitz - take a horrible situation and make it into a political situation by saying that Republicans are unfit to serve on moral issues.

What Democrats fail to remember is they have enough bones in their closets on the moral issues as Republicans. Neither party is the sole authority when it comes to moral issues in this country. As I told a friend this week, it’s sad what people think they can get away with under the cloak of power.

The baseball playoffs start this week. The Twins win the Central, and the Cardinals back into the playoffs. The Dodgers pulled off an interesting strategy yesterday all but throwing the game in order to get the Mets in the first round. The Dodgers have played well against the Mets, while they have not had as much success against the Cardinals this season.

It will be interesting to see what the Mets can do without Pedro Martinez in the line-up.

My predictions:

AL - Twins will knock off Oakland in 4 games. The Yankees will move past the Tigers in 5. The Twins will win the ALCS in 6 games. The Twins are coming in hot and that is a dangerous combination going into the postseason, dangerous for the other teams.

NL - Mets will beat the Dodgers in 5. Padres over the Cardinals in 5. Mets over the Padress in 6 games.

World Series - Twins in 7 games over the Mets.

Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans wins the You are Stupid Award for the week. During the third quarter of the Titans game with the Dallas Cowboys, Haynesworth stomped on the helmet of the Cowboy player, Andre Gurode, who was on the ground, and then stomped on him again when his helmet came off.

Haynesworth made things worse - if that’s even possible - by stomping off like a little baby screaming at the officials and his coach, Jeff Fisher, when he was suspended.  Fisher said if the league doesn’t take care of it, he will. Haynesworth did say he was sorry after the game. I suspect that he will get a long suspension - perhaps the remainder of the season.
