Pro wrestlers linked to steroids case

Posted by Shannon on March 19, 2007

It seems like we’ve been here before, but once again professional wrestling is liked to steroid use among its employees.

The latest steroid probe includes some of the more recognizable names of the modern professional wrestling movement including Edge (Adam Copeland), Randy Orton, North Carolina’s Shane Helms (The Hurricane), all of whom work for World Wrestling Entertainment. Former 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist, WWE Champion, and current NWA wrestler Kurt Angle has also been linked to the case. This is the same steroid investigation that connects former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker, and boxing champ Evander Holyfield.

Something that is also a little disturbing are some other names that have been included in the latest probe, including the late Eddie Guerrero, who died in 2005. Guerrero and Oscar Gutierrez (Rey Mysterio) were linked to an Arizona doctor David Wilbirt who supplied steroids to the two. In the case of Guerrero, his steroids were provided within months of his death.

Steroids in pro wrestling is nothing new. In 1994, Vince McMahon was tried in federal court for distributing steroids to his wrestlers.

With this many names, including some of the WWE’s top stars it will be interesting to see how the company reacts as it relates to previous allegations and the health of now a deceased performer.  Right now the company is saying no comment, but at some point those no comments must become answers.
