ESPN the Gas Pump - Good idea or Bad Marketing?

Posted by Shannon on May 7, 2007

Every stood at a gas pump outside with not much to do other than to watch the price go higher and higher?

ESPN believes it has the answer for gas pump boredom.

The Network has reached a deal with Michigan-based Gas Station TV to install television stations on gas pumps in some cities across the country. The 20-inch, high definition TVs will broadcast ESPN-produced sports highlights featuring ESPNNews anchors.

The productions are to last 4 and a half minutes.

So one has to wonder, is this a little much? I mean do we, as a culture, need sports that badly? Do we really need to see the highlights of the Ohio State-Michigan game while pumping gas? Can we not wait until we’re home/

Sitting here I’m wondering what’s next.

ESPN - the bathroom television. Get highlights while scrubbing yesterday’s grime away.

ESPN - the refrigerator.  You don’t want to miss the highlights while grabbing a Miller Lite.

I’m sure there are many more you could create.

This is marketing gone crazy. I almost feel sorry for the ESPNNews anchors who will be assigned to this duty. You’re not good enough for ESPN. You’re not good enough for even ESPN2. Yet, we would like you to be on a gas pump.

If it was me, I’d be looking for a new job. I hear Buffalo is nice this time of year.
