Being a Good Samaritan on a Cold Night

Posted by Shannon on February 11, 2008

What a night! What a long, scary, and cold night!

Let me explain.

Earlier this evening, I decided that I was hungry and I needed to get something to eat. That typically happens around 6 p.m., or so each evening. We like to call this phenomenon dinner. On this night’s dinner run, a snow storm decided to move through Wilmore causing some horrific traffic conditions, which I described as “not bad if you knew what you’re doing” when I got my dinner.

I’ll learn to eat those words.

As I was driving back, I saw a van in a ditch where a young student was on the phone and scared. I decided to get off the side of the road to help and wait with him until a tow truck arrived.  That proved to be a wise decision.

But, wait until you see what else happened this night. Read the rest of this entry »

Coming Up After This Commercial Break … The Second Half

Posted by Shannon on February 11, 2008

Someone needs to blow the Flintstone’s whistle. Vacation is over and it’s time to get back to work. The second half of the first year in seminary is about to begin, folks.

For the past few months, we’ve been learning about the history, spirituality and the language of the New Testament, learned more about the Gospel of Matthew than I ever thought was in the book, how the pope’s haven’t always been the nicest people on the block, and what it means to be a servant in the world today. Oh, and we attempted to learn Greek in one month.  We’ll see how that goes for us in future classes.

This semester bodes to be lighter on hours (I’m only taking nine hours), but more intensive in the amount of work. We’ll learn about the Old Testament, more about the history of the church, and what it means to be in ministry in today’s world.

I’m excited for the upcoming semester, the classes that I’m taking, the professors that I’ll learn from, and also being able to experience what God has for me here in this place. The first half of the year was rough by all measures of evaluation, though we did well academically, so we’re excited to hit the ground running on the second half of the year.

And who knows what will transpire or take place over these next three months. Certainly one thing is for sure, I’ll be challenged, shaped and molded into whatever God has in store for me.

So, let the games begin … or the second half of our experience.
