Being a Good Samaritan on a Cold Night
Posted by Shannon on February 11, 2008
What a night! What a long, scary, and cold night!
Let me explain.
Earlier this evening, I decided that I was hungry and I needed to get something to eat. That typically happens around 6 p.m., or so each evening. We like to call this phenomenon dinner. On this night’s dinner run, a snow storm decided to move through Wilmore causing some horrific traffic conditions, which I described as “not bad if you knew what you’re doing” when I got my dinner.
I’ll learn to eat those words.
As I was driving back, I saw a van in a ditch where a young student was on the phone and scared. I decided to get off the side of the road to help and wait with him until a tow truck arrived. That proved to be a wise decision.
But, wait until you see what else happened this night. As we waited for a tow company or a cop, another car made its way up the hill where she got stuck trying to avoid the first car. We’ll call this car … car No. 2 on the evening. The driver gets out and now we have an essential road block on the road.
I decided to walk back and forth from the top of the hill to the bottom to direct cars that were coming along. Driver No. 2 was honking on her horn to divert traffic as well. As cars came to a stop, I would help them get back out of the traffic jam to avoid more of a traffic jam than what we already had.
Eventually, another car misses the alerts and hits a side plant trying to stop, runs up an embankment near where we were standing, sideswipes both cars, and lands in the ditch. No one was hurt, but I was amazed at how quick I can jump onto a fence to get out of the way. There were some damages to the previous two cars.
So the count now stands at three cars all stopped on a hill on a tiny one-and-a-half lane road.
A few minutes later comes car No. 4 spinning out of control and we’re all running for cover and I’m blocking driver No. 2 into a fence. It was another 10 minutes or more before the cops showed up and I was released from duty.
It was a great thrill to be able to help out the drivers and make sure that everyone was OK. What a night! I’m just glad I was able to do something to help.

I appreciate it, but I was just doing what any human should do when others are in need.

Thanks Maggie. You can watch chapel online. I believe Dr. Kalas is preaching today and J.D. is preaching Thursday.
