Snowy Thoughts

Posted by Shannon on March 8, 2008

Here are some thoughts to ponder while the snow is blanketing the Greater Metropolitan Area that is Wilmore, Kentucky:

It’s amazing the difference a few months can have on a person’s life.

Isn’t it funny that as a kid you’re praying with every breath that you have that it would snow. You didn’t want to go to school. You probably didn’t even finish your Algebra homework from the night before, because the weatherman on WOAY (or insert your local horrible weather forecasters) predicted bad weather was moving into the area.

Now as an adult, it’s the opposite. Snow means hassles. You have to shovel the snow (if you own a shovel … I do not). Then you have to navigate the other people on the highway who don’t know how to drive in the snow. Avoid getting in wrecks. Oh, and let’s not forget if the kids are home … you’ve got to adjust your day accordingly.

I love how that perspective changes. I fall into the no snow camp. Not because I don’t like snow. I do. On December 25. Today is March 8 and I’m looking at about 6 to 8 inches outside. Now, I will admit I’ll probably go out and take some photos (hey, I haven’t seen this much snow since 2003) and come inside and do some stuff. This sure does take away one idea I had for today a couple of months ago - a nice hike. Maybe next weekend.

Birthday cards are always funny to read. It’s like we enjoy slapping people around on their birthday. Come on admit, you purchase the Birthday Card that brings the biggest slap from way downtown. I know I do. The card I got for my mom’s birthday on March 5 had the picture of a ladder, in which I wrote “enjoy the view from the top.” The card said something about climbing another age on the ladder, something like that. It’s how I show her my love. At least I didn’t say the usual, I’m the gift that keeps on giving, since I was born two days after her birthday.

My brother got me a card featuring a good hillbilly. The hillbilly was to be “pickin’ and a grinn’” on a banjo. Nope. He was pickin and a grinnin his nose. The card actually moves up and down to show him pickin’ his nose.  That might have been the most disgusting one that I received. But, hey I laughed.

My mother chimes in with the most awkward. She bought me one of those musical cards that plays sounds when you open it. The card played “Macho Man” by the Village People. There are not enough awkward turtle signs in the world to capture how awkward I felt opening that card this week.

At least it wasn’t this song.

Some rapid fire to close the blog post down.

Florida and Michigan should revote and the candidates, themselves, should pay for the vote … Shaq has made the Phoenix Suns worse, not better … Did John McCain really need President Bush’s endorsement? … If you’re going up against the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, is it betterto go to the NIT? …  Duke is doing the classy thing tonight by scheduling a moment of silence in remembrance of the late UNC Student Body President Eve Carson, who was found shot to death earlier this week in Chapel Hill … Skillet, I know I’ve said this before, is now one of my new favorite bands … Barlow Girl not so much … I wish I had a snow blower … I wish I was a baller …  Bush is making a mistake vetoing the waterboarding ban bill.
