This Doesn’t Help My Fear of Flying Next Week

Next week, I’m scheduled to partake in my first flight in 12 years. I’m not comfortable with the idea of not having the control of getting myself from point A (Lexington) to point B (Minneapolis) but I realize that flying gets me there quicker and allows more time for training that I need.

I’m a little scared of making this flight and have told some friends on the flight that I may cry like a girl on takeoff. (Yeah, that probably makes me less than attractive to any potential females out there, but hey I’m being honest.)

So, word this week that flights are being delayed by American Airlines (one of the airlines of choice next week) due to inspection issues doesn’t come at a great time. More than 1,000 flights have been delayed just today to work on the MD-80. A quick check of the travel plans for next week shows that I’m scheduled to be on one of those jets next week.

Oh, this is just great. Just great.

American Airlines is saying there are no safety concerns for passengers. That brings me as much relief as saying there is nothing to see here amid a cloud of smoke and fire coming from a building.

I’m sure there is nothing major with the planes and these are just inspections required by a FAA that is under intense scrutiny after the Southwest Airlines flap. But, this certainly doesn’t help me feel better to fly the friendly skies.

Hi! Here’s what I do: smush down into tiny airplane seat, take a deep breath, say a little prayer and give the control over to God, then cry like a girl — oops, I am a girl. Oh well. Skip the cry like a girl step and grip armrest tightly instead. Good luck! *grin* Linda from Crone and Bear It

  • Thanks. I think that was about what I was going to do anyways. Though instead of gripping onto the armrest, I’ll grip onto my laptop bag. In case of a crash landing, that thing is so heavy with seminary books, I should be OK for a safe landing over water. Land … not so much.
