Changing my Lifestyle

Posted by Shannon on May 19, 2008

I’ve written here numerous times about my struggles with my weight. I’ll drop a few pounds and then just as quickly as I lost the weight, I’ll gain it right back.

The last few days I’ve been really thinking about this and realized where the problem was in my approach to losing weight. I was never fully committed to the idea of dropping weight and changing my lifestyle.

That is all about to change.

I have established a goal to change my lifestyle and to be healthy again. I’m doing this for a multitude of reasons, but mainly because I want to look at myself in the mirror and not be ashamed of what I see staring back at me.

So that means I’m going to have to learn how to cook because fast food is out when this starts. Also gone, soft drinks. I’m bringing in more rest for my body. I’m going to exercise more. I’m going to eat more salads, fruits, and vegetables, and eliminate sweets as much as possible. I’m going to play golf more. I’m going to swim more. I’m going to just do things to make life healthier.

Ah, the weight goal.

My goal is to get back to my wrestling weight or at least a weight I can be comfortable with. That means somewhere in the 220 to 250 range. That means losing between 90 to 120 pounds. I’ve had girlfriends that didn’t weighed much more than 120 pounds. So we can say I want to lose a person.

It all begins with this summer in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. My accountability team will be my staff. I’m going to inform them of my plans to lose weight at training next weekend (or now if they are reading the blog). With the warm climate, work schedule, sensible meals, and lack of funds or ability to sneak in foods, the summer could bode well for some decent amount of weight loss. I would like to end my time with YouthWorks between 20 to 30 pounds lighter. That would give me a nice start on the weight loss goal going into the fall season.

This is going to be a challenge over the summer and I’ll have to find time to exercise, which will likely be a quick 30 minute stroll in the mornings before everyone gets up for the day.

I’m excited about this and I believe the change in focus will help to accomplish the goals. I’m not doing this alone. I believe a friend will be joining me in this process. So, I hope that by this time next year I will be looking at a leaner person.
