Thoughts from a Quiet Sunday

Tomorrow, I start my second job (or is third) job of the summer at a local bookstore here in Lexington, Kentucky. I’m a little nervous and excited about this job all at the same time.
I’m excited because it will be a chance to make some money while meeting new people and helping others in some unique ways. I’m nervous because outside of your favorite theological writers and the typical political fare that I’ve read over that past few years, I can’t name you the top modern authors of today.
That could be a challenge. The New York Times’ Best Seller List does offer some helpful hints, but I would have to know who Janet Evanovich is to understand how popular her book Fearless Fourteen is to readers. But, I can offer some viewpoints on Scott McClellan’s book What Happened.
My plan for tomorrow is to take a lot of notes about the authors and notice what people are buying. If people are buying a lot of one author there could be a reason behind it, for the most part. Of course, there will be a run-up for the next few weeks on anything by Tim Russert and George Carlin because of their recent deaths, so those trends have to be taken into consideration.
Regardless, this should be interesting.

I want to establish another golf tournament. The bug was place into me when I was interviewing for a job on campus and we talked about some experiences I had running a golf tournament in North Carolina.
It’s got me thinking and I would like to do another tournament for charity. I enjoyed the two tournaments that I helped to put on, even though I was filled with a lot of stress in the process, and I would love another crack at running a tournament.
Now, if only I could find a reason, the time, or the cause to create a tournament.

NASCAR is looking for alternative fuels. You know gas prices are getting high when it’s starting to affect the nation’s top racing industry.
I wonder if we will see races shortened to reduce fuel costs?

I would do a golf tournament for cancer research. You would need to have a cause that is non-political and non-religious because people get kind of wigged out about religion and politics and you won’t get maximum attendance. Cancer research or MS would be great causes that are very worthy of raising money for.

I would certainly be apt to do something for cancer research, but that is something where there is a lot of tournaments and money being raised for currently. I would like to find a charity that people know about, it appeals to people, and does not get a lot of attention.
Of course, that is if I can find the time to do a tournament.
