About Me
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. It’s not much, but it’s my collection of thoughts on the world of sports, news, faith, and my own interesting stories that come my way as I balance being a student, a youth pastor, a friend, and all the other different hats that we wear.
But I guess some of you are wondering who is the person behind this blog?
I grew up in Southern West Virginia in a tiny town known as Shady Spring. There were no stop lights, even though the intersection at the 7-11 could use one. I left Shady Spring in 1998 to move to Morgantown, W.Va., to attend West Virginia University. Freshmen year … part of it was a blur, but with some great memories. Such as the time I failed at flirting with some older women by trying to convince them that I was a transfer student and actually a junior instead of a freshmen or well the whole legend of how Big Texas began. That’s another story for another time.
In 2002, West Virginia University told me to get lost and gave me a B.S. in Journalism. I’m still slowly paying for that degree. (If only athletic purchases would count towards my loans.)
Before coming to seminary, I worked as a news writer and sports writer for The Register-Herald (Beckley, W.Va.), Times West Virginian (Fairmont, W.Va.), Exponent-Telegram (Clarksburg, W.Va.), and The Shelby Star (Shelby, N.C.). I finished my career working for the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy covering higher education issues in North Carolina.
Currently, I’m living in Wilmore, Ky., serving as a youth pastor and going to school to be a minister in the United Methodist Church. No, this certainly isn’t where I thought my life was going, but the more I embrace it, the more I experience it, the more I realize this is my life.
Well, I hope you enjoy my thoughts and opinions. Feel free to leave a comment or share the blog to your friends.
Peace,
Shannon

Hey Shannon,
I recently found your blog and I am quite impressed. Of course, I stumbled upon on while trying to find information about Rich Rodriguez and whether or not he was leaving our great University, but now that I have delved into it I have found much more.
We come from quite opposite ends of the spectrum, I grew up in Connecticut, ended up at WVU in 1991 and didn’t leave until 1997. However, I consider West Virginia more of home to me than I do Connecticut. If people make fun of CT I laugh or join them, if people slander West Virginia I get defensive and angry.
West Virginia is an easy target for people who don’t understand the beauty of the state. And I don’ t say that lightly. The phyical nature of West Virginia is striking, the mountains, the green, the water…everything. The only thing more beautiful than the environment are the people. Never have I met more friendly, loving, caring and sincere people. The best friends I have today are West Virginia natives.
As a foreigner to the land, I was embraced by friends from Bluefield, Beckley, Buckhannon, Wheeling, Nitro and Ripley. I was invited to Easter Brunches, Thanksgiving dinners, and eventually weddings and unfortunately some funerals. But I consider myself blessed to have been embraced by these wonderful people.
I learned that it is okay to embrace God, it is okay to speak your mind, it is okay to love and it is okay to be loved. Living in West Virginia made me the man I am today. And I am thankful for that, everyday. For those people who have never been to West Virginia, or make fun of it, or use it as a punchline, they just don’t get it. Bt now instead of getting angry, I just laugh to myself and I feel sorry that they will never understand one of the true treasures of our great country. I feel sad for them, becasue it has made my life incredible.
good luck with your journey Shannon, I wish you all the best.

I’m a UMC pastor (Ronceverte, Greenbrier Co.) and a graduate of Asbury. I’m not sure how I came across your blog. But, God-speed at Asbury. It’s a great school.

Mike,
Great to hear from the good people of West Virginia and thanks for the good wishes on Asbury. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for me there.
Peace.
