Thoughts from a Quiet Sunday

Tomorrow, I start my second job (or is third) job of the summer at a local bookstore here in Lexington, Kentucky. I’m a little nervous and excited about this job all at the same time.
I’m excited because it will be a chance to make some money while meeting new people and helping others in some [...]

The Upcoming General Election

A recent post made by one of my friends regarding the upcoming November election made me realize that I have yet to touch on the race pitting Barack Obama against John McCain. For a blog that touches on politics, sports, religion, and everything in between that is just unacceptable.
What comes before you are some of [...]

Tiger Woods Out for the Year

Tiger Woods will have season-ending surgery sometime in the coming weeks to repair his damaged left leg. Woods announced today that he had torn his ACL and had double stress fractures.
The greatest golfer to ever lace up a pair of spikes and play 18 holes ends his season winning the U.S. Open in dramatic fashion [...]

I Think the Calculator Lied

Turns out I didn’t need to go to Alabama to be in a hot sauna to lose weight.
Tonight, I went on the first of what will be several late-night walks over the next few months. I walked from my house, through downtown Wilmore and across to Cluckers. That’s about a total of 2 miles the [...]

Summer in Alabama

It’s almost game day!
This time tomorrow I will be somewhere flying between Cincinnati and Birmingham, Alabama. Don’t worry, I’m not as scared about flying this time. Just not looking forward to the 4 a.m., wake-up call to make my 6:50 a.m., flight. One of these days they’ll have cars that can fly. I hope. It [...]

First Year Thoughts and Reflections

When I think back to reflect on what will soon be the completion of my first year at seminary - finals begin today and conclude Wednesday morning - I’m amazed at how well the opening line to Charles DIckens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities is an applicable description.
It  was the best of times, it [...]

And I could walk … 2,100 miles

I love to travel, but this could be ridiculous. In a period of 14 days, I plan on traveling 2,100 miles. That’s right 2,100 miles. And yes with these gas prices.
Friday I’m leaving the friendly city of Mayberry around 9 or 10 a.m. That puts me into Raleigh-Durham around 7 or 8 that night. Saturday [...]

Lang, Sears Out at WVU

Heads are starting to roll at WVU in the wake of the Heather Bresch Scandal.
Provost Gerald Lang and Business School Dean Stephen Sears will step down from their current positions on June 30. According to WSAZ, Lang and Sears will remain at WVU as professors, hopefully not teaching ethics.
Lang will receive a salary of less [...]

Pastor Friends…Help!

So today, I started to write my first sermon … ever. (That little 3-minute impromptu thing in Atlanta last summer doesn’t count.) And I have a massive case of writer’s block.
I have the title of sermon. I know what I’m preaching on. I even know the theological argument I want to make.
But outside of the [...]

Mike Garrison Should Be Fired

As many people know who read this blog, I’m an alum of West Virginia University. The institution is in the news lately and not for it’s national contender football team or Sweet 16 basketball program.
Sadly, the school is in the news for having the smell of a diploma mill in giving a master’s degree to [...]
